CARL WOIWOD, SR. 85 DIES; FUNERAL WILL BE THURSDAY – WAS BORN IN GERMANY, CAME DIRECTLY HERE WHEN 23 YEARS OLD

St. John’s – Carl Woiwod, Sr., 85, died just before midnight Monday, Aug. 21, at Mercy hospital, Mason City, where he been take Monday noon. He had been ill the past six months since undergoing an operation.

He was born Aug. 14, 1859, in Germany and when 23 years old came to this country, directly to Garner. His parents died when he was about nine years of age. When he first came her he lived where Chris Reibe resides. He worked as a farmhand a while and then on the railroad about a year, later moving to the farm now occupied by Everett Welland. After living there a short time, he moved to the home place which he occupied ever since except for nine years in Ventura. After living in Ventura, Mr. and Mrs. Woiwod returned to live the last two years on the home place now farmed by their youngest son, Alfred.

Mr.Woiwod married Anna Schiska, of Germany, and the couple had been married 60 year last November. Surviving are the widow and eight children; Lena, now Louis Grell, Ventura; Frank, Great Falls, Mont.; Anna, Mrs. Ed Bohn, Ventura; Carl Jr., Walter, Otto, and Alfred all of Garner, William, Englewood, Calif. Two children had died, Tillie at the age of 4, and Edward died nine years ago.

Mr. Woiwod was a charter member of the St. John’s Lutheran church.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, 1:30 at the home and 2:00 o’clock as St. John’s church, with the Rev. W. T. Wolfrum in charge, Pallbears will be Marvin Woiwod, Ronald Woiwod, Ernest Woiwod, Donald Woiwod, Vincent Woiwod, and Milton Bohn, all grandsons.

Two grandsons are in the armed forces Orville, son of Carl Woiwod and Eugene, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Woiwod.
